Jehovah expects husbands to honor their wife by treating her with love, respect, and kindness, as marriage is a sacred gift that brings joy when both spouses uphold their vows. Sadly, many husbands adopt harmful attitudes from their upbringing or culture, leading to abuse or neglect, but Christian men must reject such influences and follow Jehovah’s standard of honor.

MARRIAGE—A GIFT FROM JEHOVAH

• Marriage is one of those gifts, where a man and woman vow to love, respect, and cherish each other.
• Maintaining a close bond brings real joy. (Proverbs 5:18).

• Husbands physically, verbally, or emotionally abusing their wife is alarmingly common.
• Some husbands act respectfully in public but mistreat their wife at home.
• Pornography strains many marriages.

WHAT LEADS TO ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR IN SOME HUSBANDS?

• Raised in a violent household, making them believe abuse is normal.
• Cultural influence that teaches a "real man" must dominate his wife.
• Lack of emotional control, especially over anger.
• Warped views on women and sex due to pornography.
• COVID-19 pandemic intensified these problems.
• None of these factors justify abuse.

CHRISTIAN HUSBANDS MUST GUARD AGAINST WORLDLY THINKING

• Husbands benefit from reading “Do You Treat Women as Jehovah Does?” in The Watchtower (January 2024).
• Thoughts lead to actions, so they must be careful not to be molded by the world. (Romans 12:1, 2)
• Even some Christian husbands have adopted worldly views and mistreated their wife.
