SA25 - Elders - Learn From Gideon’s Example

In a quiet mountain village nestled among rolling hills, there lived a group of dedicated shepherds. These shepherds weren't tending to flocks of sheep, but to a precious flock of believers. They were the Christian elders, entrusted with the spiritual well-being of their brothers and sisters. Their hearts brimmed with devotion, for they cherished the privilege of serving their congregation, striving to be true shepherds as outlined in Biblical tradition. But how could they carry on the shepherding tradition amidst the modern resistance that come from living in a vastly new world?

Amid their dedication, challenges rose like shadows on a clear day. Among them was Tony, an elder in the United States. As the world wrestled with the grip of a Covid-19 pandemic, Tony found himself drowning in work. Organizing meetings, overseeing the ministry – his tasks multiplied like tiny rabbits. However, amidst his busy schedule, he realized his personal spiritual growth suffered. Ilir, an elder in Kosovo, faced his own challenge. He was offered an assignment he felt to be quite perilous, that of aiding fellow believers in a dangerous war-torn region. Fear gnawed at him, causing him to question the practicality of the directive. And in far-off Asia, Tim, a missionary, felt the weight of exhaustion settle upon his shoulders, wondering how to keep up with the relentless pace.

The Elders' struggles mirrored those of Gideon, a figure from ancient times who was both a protector and shepherd of God's people. Elders, like Gideon, were called to care for their flock during tumultuous times. Modern-day elders could draw wisdom from Gideon's story, his humility, modesty, and unwavering obedience.

When Modesty and Humility Are Tested

Gideon, a man of quiet humility, was an unexpected hero. When chosen to deliver Israel from a formidable foe, he questioned his own qualifications. "My clan is the least," he humbly admitted. Like Gideon, who pressed on to victory despite fatigue, the devoted shepherds were reminded that, with Jehovah's strength, they could conquer any obstacle.
