SA36 - “Become Doers of the Word”
This article emphasizes the importance of not just reading God’s Word but applying its teachings in daily life to strengthen our relationship with Jehovah and find true happiness. By regularly reflecting on and practicing Bible principles, we can improve our family life, build strong friendships, and avoid many challenges, all while pleasing Jehovah and enjoying the rewards of obedience.
BECOME DOERS OF THE WORD
- Key scripture: “Become doers of the word and not hearers only.” - James 1:22.
- Reading and applying God’s Word brings happiness and blessings, as highlighted by Psalm 119:2 and Luke 11:28.
- Regularly practicing what we learn from the Bible helps us build stronger relationships, improve family life, and avoid many pitfalls. (Psalm 19:7-11).
- Reflection: Being a “doer” of the Word leads to long-term joy and spiritual growth.
SET TIME ASIDE TO READ GOD’S WORD
- Bible reading is one of “the more important things” and should be prioritized in our busy lives. (Philippians 1:10).
- Find a consistent time for Bible reading that suits your schedule—whether early morning like Victor or another quiet time.
- Regular Bible reading aligns us with the description of the happy man in Psalm 1:1, 2, who reads “day and night.”
- Ask yourself: When is the best time for me to read the Bible consistently?
CONSIDER WHAT YOU READ
- Avoid speed-reading; instead, take time to absorb and reflect on what you read, just as soil needs time to absorb rain. (James 1:24).
- Meditating on the Bible doesn’t need to be daunting—it can simply mean thinking deeply about a few verses.
- Use methods like shortening reading sessions to one chapter, as Victor does, to allow reflection throughout the day. (Psalm 119:97).
-
Questions to Consider during Bible reading:
- What does this tell me about Jehovah?
- How does this section contribute to the Bible’s message?
- How can I apply this in my life?
- How can I use these verses to help others?
SET MODEST GOALS
- Applying Bible counsel can feel overwhelming, but this is evidence of a humble, honest heart condition.
- Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, set modest, realistic goals—choose one or two areas to work on first. (Proverbs 11:2).
- Example: A sister places a note on her bulletin board with a specific goal for the week, such as focusing on mildness.
- Pray for “both the desire and the power to act” on your goals, as encouraged at Philippians 2:13.
- Success in one area often leads to progress in others, making spiritual growth more manageable.
LET GOD’S WORD BE “AT WORK IN YOU”
- Unlike those who read the Bible but do not apply it, Jehovah’s people accept it as “the word of God” and allow it to transform their lives. (1 Thessalonians 2:13).
- Challenges like finding time to read, avoiding speed-reading, or feeling overwhelmed can be overcome with Jehovah’s help.
- Determination to apply God’s Word will make us “doers,” not forgetful hearers, leading to greater happiness and spiritual rewards. (James 1:25).
Thank you for reading,
-Soli Jehova Gloria (1 Corinthians 10:31)
